"13 reasons why"
The acclaimed series of 2017, based on the 2007 novel by Jay Asher, was a hit for Netflix, although it did not receive Emmy nominations.
The role of Minnette in 13 Reasons Why is an integral part of the plot about a teenager, Hannah Baker (played by Katherine Langford), who committed suicide and left 13 cassette tapes as an audio diary. Clay listens to each of the tapes in 13 episodes and learns 13 reasons why Hannah committed suicide.
As Clay goes through the tapes, he also drags his feet to listen to them, because they are upset, which causes other characters to push him or press him to listen. That, in turn, led viewers to create numerous Internet memes in 2017 urging Clay to listen to the tapes.
His co-star Langford told MTV that Dylan Minnette is similar to his character: "He is generous, kind and courteous, and he is quite Clay".
The program experienced a backlash from its depiction of teen suicide, but went even further in season 2, addressing issues of sexual assault and more. Before that, Minnette sent a warning to fans: "Season 2 of 13 Reasons why, like season 1, she can be unbreakable, dark and even hard to see sometimes. Please watch with caution, or with your loved ones. If you or someone you know wants resources after seeing them, visit http://13reasonswhy.info. "
